What is Physiotherapy led Pilates?
Physiotherapy led Pilates is a great way of strengthening and conditioning the body. The APPI (Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute) adapted the traditional Pilates method to allow a client to be trained correctly from an injured state to a fully fit, functional and efficient state. This allowed Pilates clients to be able to embrace the exercises from any fitness level. This step-by-step approach led to the APPI Pilates Method becoming one of the most popular forms of rehabilitation training in the healthcare sector.

Information on the development of Physiotherapy led Pilates from the APPI
The APPI established itself 20 years ago following on from an academic scholarship through the Australian Physiotherapy Association. This initial study led to the development of the APPI Method. They found that the benefit of a Pilates exercise was not being optimised due to high levels of strength, control and body awareness initially being asked of client. They found that if the factors outlined below were applied to the Pilates movement, then the exercise could be a lot more successful in rehabilitation. These factors included:
- Modifying the movement
- The length of the lever (arms or legs) altered
- The demands of the spine considered in more detail
These new approaches led to the development of a step-by-step program of where every Pilates exercise was analysed on its effectiveness for a client that had suffered an injury. Modifications were made, and a unique exercise-level approach developed to allow a client to be trained correctly from an injured state to a fully fit, functional and efficient state.
